The reason I found my career in dog training isn't just my story- it's the reason Katie's K9 Academy exists.
Several years ago adopted a young dog from the shelter, who ultimately changed the course of my life. She was everything I could've wanted in a dog- loyal, obedient, intelligent, and deeply loved. But as time went on the effects of her past began to surface. She struggled with extreme fear, severe aggression, and had behavioral challenges that I simply didn't know how to navigate. Looking back, I realized it wasn't a lack of love- it was a lack of knowledge, experience, and resources. That realization led me to the world of professional dog training, where I've spent the past several years apprenticing under talented dog trainers and working with dogs of all breeds, ages, and backgrounds. Along the way, one thing became clear: I wanted to become the trainer that I needed when I was searching for answers. That purpose became the passion behind Katie's K9 Academy, and it continues to shape every dog and family I have the privilege of helping today.

At Katie's K9 Academy, we believe that training begins with understanding how dogs naturally learn. Dogs don't naturally understand our words- they learn through association, timing, body language, and outcomes of their actions. Every interaction teaches them something, whether we realize it or not. Dogs thrive when life is predictable. Clear communication, structure, and consistency help them understand what's expected, build confidence, and make better choices. Rather than expecting dogs to think like people, we communicate in a way they naturally understand, creating clarity, and trust.
Every dog learns differently, which is why we don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. While the science of learning remains the same, every dog has their own personality, motivations, and pace. That's why we take the time to understand the individual dog and tailor our approach to meet them where they are. Through clear communication, meaningful rewards, and fair, appropriate accountability, we create clarity. Training is about more than teaching obedience. Commands are simply the tools- our job is to teach both you and your dog how to utilize them in everyday life to better communicate with one another.
